Frequently Asked Questions

Will Hello Mamas sell my contact information?

The Hello Mamas app is all about meeting moms and making mom friends, so no. Hello Mamas will never, ever sell your personal contact information - this includes your name, your email address, your children's information, or any other identifying information that would allow advertisers or other entities to contact you in any way. However, Hello Mamas does collect sanitized (anonymous) demographic data to compile into curated reports that we may share with marketing firms who want to learn more about patterns of consumption associated with mothers and households.

How does the Hello Mamas app generate my matches?

We use a sophisticated algorithmic matching system designed exclusively for the Hello Mamas app to help you find local moms with similar interests, schedules, families, and personalities. That's why we created it! If you want to meet allergy moms or find moms with same age kids, our algorithm can make it happen. So if you're wondering where moms meet, look no further!

Why are there ads on the Hello Mamas app?

We know you're here to make mom friends. To help us keep on empowering mothers like you to make mom friends and find playdates for kids, we contract with individual entities and advertising networks to deliver advertisements that may be of interest to moms and families. The revenue generated by the ads displayed in our mom friend app allows us to continue to grow the site, develop our app for moms, and explore new avenues of innovation.

How does the Hello Mamas app help mom friends meet?

We created the Hello Mamas app because we know that even figuring out how to find a local mom to have playdates with can be tough! The Hello Mamas app uses specially chosen criteria to match up local moms with similar interests, schedules, families, personalities, and social preferences. Hello Mamas users can jump right in and schedule a playdate for kids or a grownup lunch with one or more new mom friends or take it slow and get to know potential mom friends through the site or app before meeting in person.

How do I send messages to my new mom friends?

You can send messages to any of your mom friends on Hello Mamas by going to your Friends page (hint: the link is in the upper right of your screen) and clicking the envelope icon of the person you want to talk to. That'll open a new page where you can write and send your message. Note that you don't have to be connected to another mom to send and receive messages.

That's easy. On the site, just log in to the Hello Mamas web app, hover your pointer over your profile pic icon in the upper right of the screen, and select Edit Profile from the dropdown menu. No. The Hello Mamas app uses its own internal messaging system. Unless you have previously shared your personal email address with one or more moms on the site or in the app, other users will only be able to contact you via message.

What is the process for creating a Hello Mamas profile?

First step, you sign up (which you've already done, yay!) and then you start answering questions right there on your profile page. Plenty of the prompts are optional so you can share as much or as little as you like, BUT the more you share, the better your matches will be. Once you've answered as many questions as you want to, we'll generate your first batch of matches! And at that point, it's up to you whether you want to reach out to some or all of the potential mom friends we suggest to say hi or to schedule a meet up.

Can I search for other moms without creating a profile?

No. We know from experience that making mom friends can be awkward and we aim to keep awkwardness to a minimum! To ensure that moms have the best possible experience using the Hello Mamas app, there is no way to search individual user profiles without downloading the app and signing up for an account.

Do I have to use my real name to sign up on the Hello Mamas app?

We can't stop you from creating an account using a fake name or a nickname, but we really think there are some great reasons to sign up using your real name. The main one is that we want moms to feel like they can trust each other and that starts with honesty. If you're nervous about sharing too much too soon, you can always use an initial in place of your last name.

How much does the Hello Mamas app cost to download and use?

Currently, there is no cost associated with creating a Hello Mamas account or downloading the Hello Mamas app - we offer a single service tier available free to all members. In the future, we may roll out a second and third tier of service with more benefits like ad-free access, a blogging platform, and/or identity verification that will be available to members who pay a monthly or yearly subscription fee. For now, we just want to get you into our mom friend app :)

What if there are no matches in my area?

Uh oh! You've filled in your profile but it looks like there aren't any matches in your area. Yet. Believe it when we say that we're doing everything we can to spread the word about Hello Mamas so that every mom, everywhere, gets tons of matches. Until then, Hello Mamas is a great place to create the ultimate virtual support network. Remember, you can always edit your profile and check the box that says 'include non-local matches' to generate a list of moms we think you-ll like who just happen to live a little - or a lot - farther away. Or go chat in the Forum to meet mom friends from all over!

Is meeting mom friends online safe?

Millions of adults use the Internet to make friends and meet new people, and it's now considered no big deal to connect with online acquaintances in real life. Statistically, meeting people via a mom friend app is extremely safe! That said, we recommend using common sense. Anyone you meet on a mom friend app is still a stranger, so you should always take the same precautions as you would when meeting a stranger on the street. Take your time scheduling coffee dates or playdates, don't share too much all at once, and trust your intuition and stay safe before meeting new mom friends for the first time.

Why should I sign up for Hello Mamas?

No matter who you are, how many kids you have, or what your schedule looks like, you can meet mom friends who understand that sometimes getting together, even just for a quick cup of coffee, isn't always easy. And making friends as an adult is hard even before you add kids to the mix - a Hello Mamas account not only helps you meet local moms, but also saves you time. It works like a dating site, but with a twist. We match moms with potential mom friends without all the stress of chatting up mothers on the playground or the expense of moms' group dues. Hello Mamas takes the stress out of "mom dating" because when you let us help you meet local moms, you only connect with the moms in your area who are open to making new mom friends.

Why are you asking me about race, income, and sexual preference? Are these questions used for matching?

The short answer is no, we don't use demographic information when we match you with local moms. And we want to stress that if any question in the profile survey makes you uncomfortable or you'd simply prefer not to answer, you can skip it! So why are we asking about these topics in particular? First, because your answers help us make Hello Mamas better. Knowing what kind of moms use Hello Mamas lets us tailor support features and advertising to better meet your needs and the needs of the community as a whole. Second, we compile anonymous statistical data about moms - NEVER EVER personal information about any one person or family - into reports that are of interest to marketers, journalists, authors, and other people who want to know more about mothers.

Are my forum/group posts public?

Yes, posts and comments made in our forum can be viewed by anyone, not just moms logged into the mom friend app. Whether other moms can see your posts in groups depends on the privacy settings of the group. But only moms who have signed into the Hello Mamas app can respond to posts. If you're concerned about safety and privacy, just be careful about how much personal information you reveal in posts and comments.

I'm not in the US - can I still use Hello Mamas?

Right now, Hello Mamas works best in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK because the site was initially designed to help members in those countries meet local moms. But we're working hard behind the scenes to optimize the site for moms in other countries, too. If you're excited to meet moms near you, hop on our mailing list and we'll let you know as soon as we open up Hello Mamas to your part of the world!

Is Hello Mamas open to outside funding?

We are always willing to chat with potential backers who believe in our mission of helping moms find mom friends and would love to hear what you have in mind. If you're as excited about Hello Mamas as we are, please get in touch!

Are dads welcome on Hello Mamas?

Our initial research showed us that dads (SAHDs and working dads) were interested in a fundamentally different social experience than moms looking for local moms/mom friends. That said, if you're a stay-at-home dad or a working dad and you can get past the name of the site, feel free to sign up!
