"Maternity Leave" when freelance

Anyone deal with a kind of maternity leave while self-employed / freelance?
I don't know many mothers in my field and not sure how much time to expect to "take off" from certain clients. Any advice out there?

I had to set up a large amount of work in advance for current clients to make it work, and then I don't feel like I really got a proper leave with either of my kids - especially not my first, a preemie. With her I hardly had anything banked in terms of work so I was rushing to finish things up when she was in the NICU. I know that at least some of my clients wouldn't have been at all sympathetic. Sounds horrible, but it's true!

Thanks, Christa. That's what I'm thinking as well. I can get as much work done beforehand as possible, but thinking I can't completely unplug for several weeks after the birth even though most clients are understanding. My industry also tends to forget you if you're not staying looped in.
